About

Born in France to a Parisian family and nurtured in the vibrant cultural scene of Montreal, Canada, Marie Leocadie brings a unique blend of international influences to the clay community.
Prior to starting her own wellness business, Somebody, in 2017, Marie worked in fashion as a designer for Macy’s and Haute Hippie, as well as various high fashion brands including Valentino and M Missoni. Despite her success as a designer and entrepreneur, she’s since pivoted her career to focus full-time on clay, her true passion and something she’s been studying since high school.
Working primarily with porcelain on the wheel, Marie infuses each piece with a sense of playfulness, personality, spontaneity and wonder. Her signature style includes transforming traditional shapes into colorful characters that reflect different facets of her own identity. She’s also known for experimenting with surface designs such as sgraffito and working with altered forms.
Guided by technique, she challenges the notion that process of making art must be neat and linear and that outcomes must adhere to strict standards of refinement, opting instead to celebrate the beauty of change, possibilities, expression and the unknown.
For example, her 2024 series of porcelain mirrors, titled “Not Your Reflection” combines sculpture, glaze and appliqué to challenge what might seem like an obvious exploration of self-reflection. As while the mirrors are thought provoking, they do not provide or demand answers from it’s viewer, but rather exists in the same, non-judgmental space as them, open to whatever story might be told or interaction it might create.
Marie has carved out a space for herself as a ceramicist in Brooklyn, New York, where she’s been defying convention and embracing whimsy for over a decade. Along with teaching ceramics at various studios around Brooklyn, Marie offers private lessons and does custom commissions for private clients.
